m-news > Issue 41, December 2005

This is m-news, M Power's monthly e-newsletter.  It's in its fifth year and goes out each month to hundreds of people who work in or run organisations and understand the power of effective communication.

m-news includes information about related themes - four snippets about business, organisational and individual effectiveness, communication and public relations.

M Power is a public relations company which also runs a speakers' agency and a publishing service.  It was founded on the belief that communication empowers.

The ‘fast four’ for December are

1. Public relations vs. marketing
2. Greetings from M Power
3. A quote we like
4. This month's book review

1. Public relations vs. marketing

Advertising Age magazine recently reported that studies by Procter and Gamble in the US of six marketing campaigns found public relations had a higher return on investment than any other medium or marketing tool for four of the brands.

In the other two marketing campaigns, public relations ranked second.

 2. Greetings from M Power

We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.  Instead of Christmas cards,         M Power calculates the cost of cards and stamps and makes a contribution to a charity to the same amount.  Last year, it was Ronald McDonald House and this year we are making a donation to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

M Power consultants will be available throughout the holiday season and look forward to working with you.

3. A quote we like

My younger son Campbell, who just turned nine, was running through what I thought was a pretty hefty Christmas list.  I commented that I thought it was a very long list.

His reply "That's why they call it Christmas!!"

Indeed.

4. This month's book review

The Hungry Spirit by Charles Handy, Arrow, London 2002

It is probably reasonable to say that any of Handy's dozen or so books are worthwhile reading - the type of books that warm your heart while messing with your head.  He writes about things that matter.   It's life and the universe sort of stuff - personal responsibility, individualism vs. the corporate state, and my favourite - his seven point plan for 'a proper education'.  How we learn becomes as important as what we learn.  Any of his work would make great 'thinking reading' for the reflective time between the end of one year and the beginning of another.
